Vrije school (Waldorf) in Amsterdam

All seven Waldorf primary schools, how admission really works (with a city-wide priority most parents don't know about), the deadlines, the costs, and what is truly different.

🌱 What a vrije school is in the Netherlands

  • A vrije school (also vrijeschool) is the Dutch name for a Steiner or Waldorf school: head, heart and hands, with lots of art, music, movement, nature and the rhythm of the year.
  • It is a government-funded school, free of tuition, like every Dutch school. It follows the same national learning goals and, in the last year, children take the same compulsory end-of-primary test (doorstroomtoets) as everywhere else.
  • They are growing: the Netherlands had 133 vrije schools in 2024/25 (102 primary, 31 secondary), up from 114 five years earlier.
  • Lessons are in Dutch. There is no English stream.

📝 How to apply (and the city-wide priority)

  • Vrije schools use the same central system as all Amsterdam primary schools. The registration form (voorkeursformulier) arrives by post around your child's 3rd birthday. You list at least 5 schools and hand it in at your first-choice school.
  • After the deadline a computer places children by priority, with a lottery when a school is oversubscribed. Over 90% of children get their first choice.
  • The part most parents miss: at five vrije schools (Geert Groote I and II, Amsterdam West, Kairos and Waldorf aan de Werf), every child with an Amsterdam address gets priority, no matter where you live. At most other schools priority goes to the 8 schools nearest your home.
  • Priority order for your first choice: a brother or sister at the school, then a linked preschool (VVE) or daycare, then a parent working at the school, then the school's priority group, then all other Amsterdam children.
  • Most vrije schools hold information mornings for parents (without children). At Kairos it is required; go before your child turns 3.

Deadlines for starting in 2026/27:

Child bornHand in the form by
1 Sep – 31 Dec 202212 March 2026
1 Jan – 30 Apr 202328 May 2026
1 May – 31 Aug 20235 November 2026
  • For 2027/28, Geert Groote School II lists 11 March 2027 (born Sep–Dec 2023) and 3 June 2027 (born Jan–Apr 2024). Check the official brochure when it comes out.
  • Moving schools: since 1 August 2026 switching between Amsterdam primary schools is in principle only possible at the start of a school year, with both schools agreeing. This doesn't apply when you move house.

💶 What it costs

  • No tuition. Parents are asked for a voluntary contribution (vrijwillige ouderbijdrage) for festivals, eurythmy and materials. Geert Groote School I asks at most €225 per child, and says less is fine too.
  • By law (since 2021), a school may not exclude your child from any activity, school trips included, when you don't pay.

🎨 What is really different

  • Kleuterklas (ages 4–6, mixed ages): free play, a steady daily rhythm, movement games told as stories, and lots of nature. At Kairos the 4-year-olds stay home on Wednesdays as a rest day.
  • Reading at the usual age. Klas 1 is the same year as groep 3 elsewhere, when children are about 6. What differs is the method: letters traditionally come through pictures and stories, and the school first checks whether your child is ready to learn. In some countries Waldorf schools start reading much later; in the Netherlands they don't. (Klas 1–6 = groep 3–8.)
  • Main lesson blocks: each morning starts with a block on one theme for several weeks (periodeonderwijs), followed by practice lessons.
  • Subjects you won't see elsewhere: eurythmy (movement to music and speech), form drawing, handwork, painting, singing, woodwork.
  • Festivals of the year: Michaelmas, Sint Maarten with lanterns, the advent spiral, Easter, Whitsun, St John's and a spring market. Parents help a lot.
  • Few screens: schools keep screens to a minimum, and Kairos asks parents not to use their phones at school or in the playground. Rules differ per school, so ask.
  • English: at Kairos, reading and writing in English starts in klas 4.

🧸 Before school: Waldorf toddler groups & care

  • Stichting Vrije Peuterklassen Amsterdam (SVPA): two Waldorf toddler groups, next to Geert Groote School I and II in Zuid.
  • Het Kleine Huis aan het Plein: anthroposophic childcare from 6 months to 4 years, on the Hygiëaplein.
  • De Vlinderboom: toddler care and after-school care inside the Vrijeschool Amsterdam West building.
  • BSO Lotus: anthroposophic after-school care at Geert Groote School II.
  • A toddler group does not guarantee a place at the school. Always hand in the registration form.

🎓 After primary: Waldorf secondary school

  • Geert Groote College Amsterdam (Zuid) offers mavo, havo and vwo and takes pupils from vrije and regular primary schools alike.
  • Admission runs through Amsterdam's central secondary school procedure, like every other secondary school.
  • Nearby: Rudolf Steiner College in Haarlem and the Adriaan Roland Holstschool in Bergen.

💛 A teacher's tip: questions for the information morning

  • How long does one teacher stay with the same class?
  • How does the school help a child who doesn't speak Dutch yet?
  • How many screens, and from which class?
  • How does settling in (wennen) work in the kleuterklas?
  • What does the parent contribution pay for, and how much do parents help with festivals?

A vrije school asks a lot of parents: festivals, the market, evening talks. That's a lovely way into a Dutch community, and it's also a lot of evenings to cover.

Good to know: this is friendly orientation, not official advice. Deadlines and admission rules change, so always check the official source linked in each section before you act on it.
